FAQs

Got Questions? We've Got Answers

The online lessons, multiple choice quizzes and case studies take most people around six to eight hours to complete.

With the Observer Report and other forms that may need to be completed, the total time for the course is typically a couple of hours more.

However, everyone learns at a different pace. If you've been working in the food industry for years, it's likely you'll already be familiar with much of the course content. If English is not your first language, it may take longer to work through the lessons.

Some AIFS students enrol, complete the course, and receive their Statement of Attainment all on the same day.

Simply click on the blue 'Start Online Now' button on this page and follow the prompts. You'll be enrolled and ready to start in just a few minutes.

All you need to do is supply some basic details (like your name and address) and your credit/debit card information.

If you'd prefer to complete your registration over the phone, that's no problem. Just give us a call on 0386409696 and we'll help you to get started

When we’ve assessed you as competent, we’ll send you an email to let you know that you’ve passed, as well as an email copy of your Statement of Attainment and NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate (if applicable).

This will usually happen a few days after you complete your course; however, as part of our quality assurance process, we reserve the right to contact you or your nominated observer to conduct a competency conversation or verification of assessment prior to awarding a Statement of Attainment.

You will receive your graduation pack, including your printed Statement of Attainment and NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate (if applicable), in the post, between 3 and 7 business days from the successful completion of the course and assessment.

No, you don’t need to go anywhere for an exam.

Once you’ve completed your online lessons and quizzes, some courses may also require you to submit a Job Log or request someone you’ve worked with (past or present) to complete an Observer Report, about tasks you’ve already been doing. Other courses may optionally allow you to do a virtual recorded video-based assessment.

Yes, most food businesses in Australia* must now comply with Food Standard 3.2.2A and have employed at least one qualified Food Safety Supervisor before applying for a food business licence.

When you complete the Food Safety Supervisor Course, you're issued with a Statement of Attainment containing details of the Units of Competency you've obtained.

If you're in New South Wales, you'll also get a NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate.

These documents are what you need to present to your local council to nominate a Food Safety Supervisor and get your food business licence.

Note: The Units of Competency vary depending on the food industry sector you select during registration, and each state and territory only recognises certain industries for Food Safety Supervisor training.

The following are the only industries recognised for Food Safety Supervisor training in each state and territory:

  • ACT: Hospitality, Retail and Health & Community are accepted. Supermarket workers located within the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) should select the Hospitality industry to meet ACT government requirements

  • NSW: Hospitality and Retail are accepted

  • NT: Hospitality and Retail are accepted

  • QLD: All industries are accepted

  • SA: Hospitality, Retail and Health & Community are accepted

  • TAS: Hospitality, Retail and Health & Community are accepted

* Note for VIC: In Victoria, all Food Safety Supervisors who acquired their certification before December 8 2023, have until December 2028 to renew it.
