What is a Food Safety Supervisor course? The quick answer
A Food Safety Supervisor course is nationally recognised training — units SITXFSA005 and SITXFSA006, together the SITSS00069 skill set — that qualifies a nominated person in a food business to oversee safe food handling. Under Food Safety Standard 3.2.2A, most Australian food businesses handling unpackaged, potentially hazardous food must have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor who is reasonably available. At Melbourne Tech Institute (RTO #45799) the course is 100% online, costs $99 (normally $199), takes most people a few hours, and the certificate is issued within one business day of completing the assessment. It is accepted in every Australian state and territory; NSW additionally requires the NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate, which we can add for $30. Most states require retraining every five years; Victoria sets no renewal period.

How much does a Food Safety Supervisor course cost?
The Food Safety Supervisor course costs $99 (normally $199) at Melbourne Tech Institute. That covers both nationally recognised units — SITXFSA005 and SITXFSA006 — with no hidden fees. In NSW, an optional NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate is available for an extra $30.
How long does it take to get a Food Safety Supervisor certificate?
The course is 100% online and self-paced — most people finish in a few hours to a day. Once you complete the assessment, your nationally recognised certificate is issued within one business day.
How long is a Food Safety Supervisor certificate valid?
The nationally recognised units (SITXFSA005 & SITXFSA006) don't carry an expiry date themselves. But since December 2023, most states and territories — NSW, QLD, WA, SA, TAS and the ACT — require your Food Safety Supervisor training to have been completed within the last 5 years, so in practice you renew every five years (Victoria currently sets no renewal period). NSW also needs its own certificate, which you recertify every five years.

The Basics
What is a Food Safety Supervisor?
A Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) is the person in a food business responsible for overseeing safe food handling and making sure the business meets its food safety obligations. Under Food Standard 3.2.2A, most Australian food businesses that handle unpackaged, potentially hazardous food must have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor.
Some providers split this training into Food Safety Level 1 (hygienic practices — SITXFSA005) and Level 2 (safe food handling — SITXFSA006). Our course includes both levels in one — the complete Food Safety Supervisor skill set, with nothing extra to buy.
This course gives you the nationally recognised qualification to step into that role with confidence.

Is this course nationally recognised?
Yes. You’ll gain the nationally recognised units SITXFSA005 (Use hygienic practices for food safety) and SITXFSA006 (Participate in safe food handling practices), issued by Melbourne Tech Institute (RTO #45799).
Is this a Level 1 & 2 food safety course?
Yes — this is the complete Food Safety Supervisor package. SITXFSA005 covers what many providers call Level 1 (food handling & hygiene) and SITXFSA006 covers Level 2 (safe food handling & supervision). You get both levels in the one $99 course — nothing extra to buy.
Is there a free Food Safety Supervisor course?
No — be careful here. Free programs like DoFoodSafely are a helpful introduction, but they are not accredited and do not make you a Food Safety Supervisor. To meet Standard 3.2.2A, your FSS training must come from a registered training organisation (RTO). Ours is a registered training organisation issuing the same nationally recognised certificate for $99 — versus around $199 at other providers. Read our full guide on free vs accredited courses →
