Awareness course · Online

Fire Warden Awareness, theory online.

A short online course on the theory behind being a fire warden at work: how fires start and spread, how to prevent them, and how an evacuation works. Theory only: you must also take part in your workplace’s evacuation exercise. Non-accredited course. Not nationally recognised training; no unit of competency or Statement of Attainment is issued.

  • About 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Online, self-paced
  • Instant Certificate of Completion

Is this the right course for you?

Yes, if you want the theory first

You have been asked to be a fire or emergency warden at your workplace, or you want to understand the role, and you want a clear grounding in the theory before you take part in your workplace’s own emergency procedures and evacuation exercise.

No, if you need a nationally recognised qualification

This is a non-accredited awareness course. It is not a nationally recognised qualification, it is theory only, and it does not replace taking part in your workplace’s evacuation exercise or learning your site’s emergency plan.

What you will learn

The theory, in plain language

  1. 01

    How fires start and spread

The basics of fire: fuel, heat and oxygen, how fire and smoke spread through a building, and why smoke is the bigger danger.

  2. 02

    Preventing fires

Common causes of workplace fires, good housekeeping, and spotting hazards before they become emergencies.

  3. 03

    The role of a warden

What a fire or emergency warden is asked to do, who they work with, and how they support the people around them.

  4. 04

    Evacuation basics

How an evacuation is planned and run in general terms: raising the alarm, getting people out, assembly areas and checking in.

  5. 05

    Helping people who need support

Planning for people who may need extra help to leave, and communicating clearly and calmly in an emergency.

  6. 06

    Your workplace comes next

What you still need to do at your own workplace: take part in its emergency procedures and evacuation exercise, and learn its emergency plan, alarms, exits and equipment.

Fire Warden Awareness — your questions answered

Is this a nationally recognised qualification?

No. It is a non-accredited awareness course. You get a Certificate of Completion from Melbourne Tech Institute, not a nationally recognised qualification or Statement of Attainment.

Is this enough to be my workplace’s fire warden?

No. This course is theory only. A fire warden must also take part in their own workplace’s emergency procedures and evacuation exercise (drill), and learn their site’s emergency plan, alarms, exits and equipment. This course does not replace that, and we cannot do it for you online. In Queensland, it is also not Fire Safety Adviser training and not your building’s general or first-response evacuation instruction.

Will my employer accept it?

That is up to your employer. Some ask for general awareness training before you take on the role. Check with them if you are not sure.

How long does it take?

About 1.5 to 2 hours. It is online and self-paced, so you can stop and start when it suits you.

How do I pass, and when do I get my certificate?

You finish the lessons and pass an online quiz. Your Certificate of Completion is available straight away when you pass.

Can my employer buy it for our staff?

Yes. Each person enrols with their own details and their own email address. We offer group pricing for 5 or more. Email [email protected] and we will help set it up.

Do I need a USI?

No. A USI is only needed for nationally recognised training, and this course is not.

How much does it cost?

$39 AUD at checkout, including GST. No other fees.
