HACCP course — FBPFSY3002 Participate in a HACCP team
Nationally recognised HACCP training for people who already work in a food business. You study online, then you are assessed on the real HACCP work you do at your workplace — and you finish with a Statement of Attainment naming the unit FBPFSY3002.
Wanting your premises or food safety system certified? That is a certification body's job, not ours — this course qualifies a person to work in a HACCP team.
Read this before you enrol
This is not an instant online certificate. The rules for this unit are set nationally and we cannot vary them:
- You need access to a workplace that has a food safety program. Without one, you cannot be assessed.
- You must be observed actively participating in a food safety team on at least two separate occasions.
- You must identify hazards at critical control points in that workplace, and establish and validate control standards for at least two potential hazards.
- Assessment happens in a real workplace, using your real food safety program documentation and real interactions with your team.
If you want a certificate today with no workplace involved, this is the wrong course — you are almost certainly looking for our Food Safety Supervisor course ($129, certificate within one business day).
What it is
What is HACCP training?
HACCP — Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points — is the internationally used system for keeping food safe by finding the points in a process where something can go wrong and controlling them. In Australia, most food businesses that need a food safety program build it on HACCP principles.
FBPFSY3002 Participate in a HACCP team is the nationally recognised unit for the people who do that work day to day: identifying hazards, monitoring critical control points, keeping the records, and taking part in reviews of the plan. It sits inside the national training package as a named elective in MSL30122 Certificate III in Laboratory Skills, which Melbourne Tech Institute already delivers — which is why we can issue a Statement of Attainment for this unit on its own.
Your certificate names the unit code FBPFSY3002. That matters: an auditor or a supplier checking your team's competence is looking for the unit code, not a course name.
Who it suits

- Are on, or joining, your workplace's food safety or HACCP team
- Work in QA, production supervision, technical or compliance roles
- Have been asked by a customer, supplier agreement or audit scheme to show HACCP competence

How it works
Online learning, workplace assessment
You enrol and confirm your workplace
At checkout you confirm you work in — or have access to — a food business with a documented food safety program and a HACCP team. You give us the actual business, supervisor and observer details when you first log in to start the course. Not sure you can be assessed? Enquire first and we'll check with you before you pay.
You study online
HACCP principles, the seven steps, hazard analysis, critical control points, monitoring, corrective action and record keeping — self-paced, on any device.
You do the work at work
You take part in your food safety team, identify hazards at critical control points and establish and validate controls — using your workplace's real documentation.
You're observed and assessed
Your participation is observed on at least two occasions and your evidence is assessed. When you're competent, we issue your Statement of Attainment for FBPFSY3002.
Price
What HACCP training costs in Australia
It's $449, including assessment of your workplace evidence.
| Where it's from | Price |
|---|---|
| Melbourne Tech Institute — FBPFSY3002 | $449 |
| Other self-serve online accredited FBPFSY3002 | $490 |
| Instructor-led HACCP courses (scheduled dates) | $1,595 – $1,800 |
| Non-accredited "HACCP plan kits" and awareness courses | $18 – $100 — no nationally recognised unit, no Statement of Attainment |
If price is the only thing that matters, the non-accredited kits are cheaper — but they are not nationally recognised training and they do not produce a Statement of Attainment. Be sure which one you actually need before you buy either.
Not the same thing
HACCP course vs Food Safety Supervisor
These get mixed up constantly, and picking the wrong one wastes money. The short version: the Food Safety Supervisor certificate is the one the law asks most food businesses for; the HACCP unit is a workplace competency for people on a food safety team.
| HACCP — FBPFSY3002 | Food Safety Supervisor | |
|---|---|---|
| Required by law? | No — driven by customers, suppliers and audit schemes | Yes — most food businesses must have one (Standard 3.2.2A) |
| Workplace needed? | Yes — compulsory | No |
| Delivery | Online learning + workplace observation | 100% online |
| Time to certificate | Weeks — paced by your workplace | Within one business day |
| Price | $449 | $129 |

HACCP training — your questions answered
Is this HACCP course nationally recognised?
Yes. It is the nationally recognised unit of competency FBPFSY3002 Participate in a HACCP team. On successful completion you receive a Statement of Attainment for that unit, issued by Melbourne Tech Institute (RTO #45799). Your certificate names the unit code FBPFSY3002 — that is the code an employer or auditor will look for.
Can I do this HACCP course online?
The learning is online. The assessment is not — the unit requires you to be observed taking part in a food safety team in a real workplace on at least two occasions. So it is an online course with a compulsory workplace component, not a course you can finish at your keyboard in an afternoon.
Do I need to work in a food business to enrol?
Yes. The assessment requirements for this unit can only be met in a workplace that has a food safety program — you have to identify hazards at real critical control points and work with real team members. If you do not currently work in or have access to a food business, we cannot assess you, and we will tell you that rather than take your money.
How is this different from your Food Safety Supervisor course?
Completely different. Our Food Safety Supervisor course is $129, 100% online, and the certificate is issued within one business day — no workplace, no observation. This HACCP unit sits above that: it is for people who are part of a food safety team building and monitoring a HACCP plan, and it must be assessed at work. If you need the legally required supervisor certificate under Standard 3.2.2A, the Food Safety Supervisor course is what you want.
Can you certify my business or my premises to HACCP?
No, and be careful who tells you they can. Certifying a site, product or food safety system is done by a certification body such as HACCP Australia or SAI Global — it is an audit of your business. We are a training organisation: we train and assess people against a nationally recognised unit. If you searched for HACCP certification for your premises, we are not the right provider.
How much does it cost?
It's $449, including assessment of your workplace evidence. For comparison, the only other self-serve online accredited version of this unit in Australia is $490, and instructor-led HACCP training generally runs $1,595–$1,800.
How long does it take?
That depends far more on your workplace than on the study. The online learning is a small number of hours; the assessment is paced by when your food safety team actually meets, because you must be observed on at least two separate occasions. Most people should plan for weeks, not days.
Is a HACCP qualification required by law in Australia?
No. The Food Standards Code requires many food businesses to have a food safety program, and Standard 3.2.2A requires a trained Food Safety Supervisor — but no law requires a named individual to hold a HACCP unit. People usually do this unit because a customer, a supermarket supplier agreement or a third-party audit scheme asks for evidence of HACCP competence, or because they have moved into a QA role.
What do I need from my employer?
Access to your food safety program documentation, and the ability to take part in food safety team meetings and hazard reviews where someone can observe you. At checkout you confirm you have a suitable workplace; we collect the actual business, supervisor and observer details once you start the course, so nothing holds up your study. Most people doing this unit have their employer behind them from the start — if you are enquiring on behalf of a team, say so on the form and we will talk to you about a workplace group.
Not sure whether HACCP is what you need?
Tell us what's been asked of you and we'll point you to the right course — even when that's not one of ours.
