Is this the right course for you?

Yes, if you want a clear start

You work in hospitality, retail, a warehouse, cleaning, aged care or similar, and you want to understand how to lift and move things without getting hurt. Or your employer asked you to do general manual handling awareness training.

No, if you need a nationally recognised qualification

This is a non-accredited awareness course. It is not a nationally recognised qualification, and it does not replace the training your employer must give you on your own tasks and equipment.

What you will learn

Safe moving, in plain language

  1. 01

    Spot the risks

What a hazardous manual task is, and the things that make a task risky: force, awkward posture, repetition, long duration and vibration.

  2. 02

    Safer ways to work

Better ways to lift, carry, push and pull, when to use equipment, and when to ask for a team lift.

  3. 03

    Your responsibilities

What your employer must do, what you must do, and how to report a hazard or an injury. Based on Safe Work Australia’s guidance on hazardous manual tasks.

Manual Handling Awareness — your questions answered

Is this a nationally recognised qualification?

No. It is a non-accredited awareness course. You get a Certificate of Completion from Melbourne Tech Institute, not a nationally recognised qualification or Statement of Attainment.

Does it replace the training my employer has to give me?

No. Your employer must still train you on the tasks and equipment at your own workplace. This course covers the general principles so you understand the risks and the safer ways to work.

Will my employer accept it?

That is up to your employer. Some ask for general awareness training before you start. Check with them if you are not sure.

How long does it take?

About 1.5 to 2 hours. It is online and self-paced, so you can stop and start when it suits you.

How do I pass, and when do I get my certificate?

You finish the lessons and pass an online quiz. Your Certificate of Completion is available straight away when you pass.

Can my employer buy it for our staff?

Yes. Each person enrols with their own details and their own email address. We offer group pricing for 5 or more. Email [email protected] and we will help set it up.

Do I need a USI?

No. A USI is only needed for nationally recognised training, and this course is not.
