How you learn

A made-up company, so you never need a workplace

All your jobs are set at Quillbeck Foods, a made-up food factory. You get its floor plans, staff list, hazard and incident records, chemical register and safety paperwork. You do the job of the WHS adviser who assists the managers.

Every section starts with a short video from Helen, your WHS trainer. Then you work through short lessons, with a picture on the page and a worked example beside every box.

No video uploadsNothing to film or send.
Examples everywhereNo blank-page essays.
Work aloneNo class, no timetable, no placement.

Certificate IV in WHS — your questions answered

Is this a nationally recognised qualification?

Yes. BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety is a nationally recognised qualification (the current release, Release 2). Melbourne Tech Institute is RTO #45799. You can check us on training.gov.au.

Do I need to be working in a workplace to do it?

No. You don’t need a workplace, a placement or a supervisor. You work through a made-up company, Quillbeck Foods, so everything you need is given to you. Nothing is filmed and you never upload a video.

How long does it take?

It is self-paced and you have up to 12 months. How fast you go depends on your week. There is no timetable and no deadline inside the 12 months.

Are there entry requirements?

No formal entry requirements. Before you start we ask for your USI (Unique Student Identifier) and run a short check to make sure the course suits you. If you don’t have a USI, it’s free and takes about five minutes at usi.gov.au.

Who is this course for?

People who want to work in, or move into, a WHS role — for example assisting with safety at a business — as well as supervisors and managers who are handed safety on top of their job, and people who want a recognised qualification for what they already do. It sits at Certificate IV level, so expect real thinking and real writing, not just ticking boxes.

What will I actually have to do?

Work through short lessons and a Helen video in each section, then complete guided jobs for the company. In the jobs you check compliance, run consultation, assess risks, work on a safety system, respond to incidents, and so on. Most of it is tapping answers; some boxes ask for a few sentences in your own words. Every box has an example next to it.

Who marks my work?

An AI check looks at your work within minutes and tells you what’s missing, so you can fix it before you send it in. Then a qualified assessor decides whether you’ve met the requirements. A person decides — not the computer.

What if my work isn’t good enough the first time?

You can resubmit as many times as you need to.

Which units are in it?

Ten units: five core and five electives, listed on this page. They are all desk-based, so you can do every one without a workplace.

Does it cover Victoria and the other states?

It teaches the model WHS laws. Victoria has its own OHS Act, so where Victoria differs there is a short “If you work in Victoria” box. Workers’ compensation differs in every state, so the course shows you where to find your own state’s information.

Can I get credit for what I already know?

Yes. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available if you already have the skills and evidence. Email [email protected] or use our enquiry form and we’ll tell you how it works.

Is there a payment plan?

Pay upfront. Need a payment plan? Email [email protected] or use our enquiry form and we’ll set one up.

How much does it cost?

$1,295 AUD, paid upfront at checkout. Need a payment plan? Email [email protected] or use our enquiry form and we’ll set one up.
