Laboratory RPL — get qualified for skills you already have
Already working in a lab? Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) turns your real experience into a nationally recognised qualification — often faster, and without repeating what you already know.
What is RPL?
Your experience counts
If you already do laboratory work, you may not need to study a full course to get qualified. Recognition of Prior Learning is a formal assessment that recognises the skills and knowledge you’ve built on the job, and matches them against a nationally recognised qualification.
You provide evidence of what you can already do; a qualified assessor confirms it; and where there are gaps, we top them up with targeted training. The result is the same qualification and Statement of Attainment you’d get from the course — recognised by employers right across Australia.
How it works
RPL in four straightforward steps
Free eligibility chat
Tell us about your laboratory experience and the role you do. We’ll let you know which qualification is the best fit and whether RPL is right for you — no cost, no obligation.
Map your experience
We match the skills and knowledge you already have against the nationally recognised units of competency, so you only ever cover what you genuinely need to.
Gather your evidence
You provide evidence of your competence — work samples, records, references from a supervisor, and a workplace observation or competency conversation. We guide you through exactly what’s needed.
Assessment & qualification
A qualified assessor reviews your evidence. Where there are gaps, we offer targeted training to close them — then you receive the same nationally recognised qualification.
Qualify through RPL
Which laboratory qualification fits you?
RPL is available for all three of our nationally recognised laboratory qualifications. Not sure which level matches your experience? We’ll help you work it out.

Laboratory RPL — your questions answered
What is RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that recognises the skills and knowledge you already have — from work, training or experience — against a nationally recognised qualification. Instead of repeating what you already know, you provide evidence of your competence and are assessed against the same units of competency.
Who is laboratory RPL for?
RPL suits people already working in, or experienced with, laboratory or field-testing work who don’t yet hold a formal qualification — for example long-serving lab technicians, sample preparation and field staff, and people who learned on the job. If that sounds like you, get in touch and we’ll check your eligibility.
Is an RPL qualification the same as studying the course?
Yes. RPL leads to exactly the same nationally recognised qualification (e.g. MSL40122) and Statement of Attainment, issued by Melbourne Tech Institute (RTO #45799). It is recognised by employers across Australia — the only difference is how your competence is assessed.
How long does RPL take?
It depends on your experience and how quickly you can gather your evidence. Because you’re not sitting through content you already know, RPL is often faster than completing the full course. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe after your eligibility chat.
What if I have gaps in my evidence?
That’s normal. Where your evidence doesn’t fully cover a unit, we offer targeted gap training to bring you up to the standard — so you can still complete the qualification without redoing the parts you’ve already mastered.
Is government funding available for RPL?
