Renew Your NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate

In New South Wales you renew by completing a recertification course with an NSW Food Authority approved provider — that is this page, $119 all-in, and we are approval no. 88522. You are eligible while your NSW certificate is still current, or expired less than 90 days ago. Outside NSW there is no renewal course as such: most states expect your training to have been completed within the last five years, so you simply complete the nationally recognised course again. Victoria is the exception — it sets no renewal period at all, so a Victorian certificate does not expire and there is nothing to renew.

It depends entirely on your state, and a lot of websites get this wrong. NSW issues a certificate valid for five years and runs its own renewal scheme. WA, SA, QLD, TAS, ACT and NT generally expect training completed within the last five years, so in practice you retrain every five years. Victoria sets no renewal period — if you trained in Victoria, your certificate does not lapse. The NSW Food Authority allows a 90-day window after expiry to replace your certificate through this shorter recertification course. If it expired more than 90 days ago, the Authority requires you to complete the full NSW Food Safety Supervisor course instead ($164 all-in). You start with a short core food safety knowledge check (20 questions, 80% to pass), then the four mandatory NSW Key Focus Areas unlock: allergen management, safe egg handling, cleaning and sanitising, and Food Act offences. The nationally recognised units you already hold (SITXFSA005 & SITXFSA006) are recognised, not retaught — so beyond the knowledge check you’re only completing the NSW-specific content required to renew.

Under the NSW Food Act, a food business generally has 30 days to appoint a Food Safety Supervisor with a current certificate once the existing one expires. Renewing before your certificate lapses avoids that clock starting at all — and avoids the shorter renewal pathway closing to you.

Your renewed NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate is the NSW Food Authority’s certificate, issued by us as a provider approved under the NSW FSS program, and sent out to you. It’s valid for another five years from the date it’s issued.
