Is it the law? Under Food Safety Standard 3.2.2A, most Australian food businesses that handle unpackaged, potentially hazardous food must have a trained Food Safety Supervisor who is reasonably available.
Do pubs, clubs & rsls need a Food Safety Supervisor?
If your venue serves bistro meals, bar snacks, function platters or carvery to the public, you're handling unpackaged, potentially hazardous food — which means you need a trained Food Safety Supervisor who is reasonably available. This applies to licensed pubs, RSLs, bowls and sporting clubs, and community clubs alike. Owners and venue managers usually need at least one nominated supervisor per venue, but because hospitality runs across breakfast, lunch, dinner and late functions, smart operators train several people so there's always a certified supervisor on shift. Head chefs, kitchen hands, bistro and bar staff, duty managers and gaming-floor team leaders who oversee food service are all ideal candidates.
Why pubs, clubs and RSLs need a Food Safety Supervisor
Under Food Safety Standard 3.2.2A, most Australian food businesses that handle unpackaged, potentially hazardous food must have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor who is reasonably available. For a licensed venue, that covers almost everything coming out of your kitchen — the schnitzel and parma, the Sunday roast, the seafood basket, the function buffet and the platters that go out to the bar.
A Food Safety Supervisor is the person who knows how to keep that food safe: correct cold-chain and reheating temperatures, avoiding cross-contamination at a busy pass, safe handling during big functions, and keeping bistro and bar service running properly. Training your team helps protect your patrons, your reputation and the good standing of your venue.
- Covers bistro meals, carvery, bar snacks and function catering
- Supports safe food service during peak trade and large events
- Helps protect your venue's reputation and good standing
- One certified supervisor must be reasonably available when food is handled
Cover every shift, not just one person
Hospitality doesn't run nine-to-five. A pub or club can be plating bistro meals at midday, running a 150-head function at six, and serving bar food until close. Relying on a single trained supervisor leaves you exposed the moment they take leave, call in sick or finish their shift.
The practical answer is to train several people across your roster — a head chef, a duty manager, a senior kitchen hand and a floor supervisor — so a certified Food Safety Supervisor is always reasonably available. At $99 each and only a few hours online, it's a low-cost way to keep every shift covered.
- Train across breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night functions
- Avoid gaps when staff take leave or change rosters
- Build a roster where every shift has a certified supervisor
- Self-paced online study fits around split shifts and weekend trade

Pubs, Clubs & RSLs Food Safety Supervisor — FAQs
Does our pub or club really need a Food Safety Supervisor?
In most cases, yes. Under Food Safety Standard 3.2.2A, most Australian food businesses that handle unpackaged, potentially hazardous food must have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor who is reasonably available. A bistro, carvery, function kitchen or bar serving hot food all fall under this, so a licensed venue serving meals will generally need at least one certified supervisor.
How many people at our venue should be trained?
Only one certified Food Safety Supervisor needs to be reasonably available, but because pubs, clubs and RSLs run across multiple shifts and functions, most operators train several staff. Having a head chef, duty manager and a senior kitchen hand all certified means you're always covered when someone is on leave or off shift. At $99 each, it's an affordable way to protect every shift.
Can our kitchen and floor staff complete this around their shifts?
Yes. The course is 100% online and completely self-paced, so your team can study between split shifts, on a quiet afternoon or from home. Most people finish in just a few hours, and there are no prerequisites — anyone on your roster can enrol, from experienced chefs to new bar and bistro staff.
How quickly can a new supervisor be certified?
Fast. Because the course takes only a few hours and the certificate is issued within one business day of completing the assessment, you can have a new Food Safety Supervisor job-ready almost straight away — handy when you've had a resignation or you're staffing up before a busy function season.
Our club is in NSW — is there anything extra?
Yes. New South Wales also requires a separate NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate. You can add this with our team for an extra $30. The NSW certificate is valid for 5 years, after which you recertify. Outside NSW, the nationally recognised certificate at $99 is all you need.
