Infection Control Certificate — your questions answered
What is the Infection Control Certificate?
It is the nationally recognised unit HLTINF006 Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control. You get a Statement of Attainment for the unit. Melbourne Tech Institute is RTO #45799. You can check us on training.gov.au.
Do I need to be working somewhere to do it?
Yes. You need to work or volunteer somewhere with infection risk, such as aged care, disability support, childcare, health, cleaning, or beauty and personal services. You also need a supervisor there. The unit is assessed in a real work setting, so we can’t leave this step out.
Who can be my supervisor?
The person who supervises you at work, such as your manager, team leader or a senior nurse. Not a family member or close friend. They need to be able to watch you do the practical tasks and then fill in a short online form. We email them a link, so there is nothing for them to print or post.
What does my supervisor have to confirm?
That they watched you follow infection control steps on 3 different occasions, and handle 3 incidents. One of the incidents is a practice blood or body-fluid spill drill at your workplace, using a spill kit. Your supervisor records what they saw. An assessor decides the result, not your supervisor.
Is there any video to film or upload?
No video. There is no classroom and no work placement either. You learn online, answer tap-only quizzes, and your supervisor fills in an online form about what they watched you do. The only upload is a phone photo of the incident report you write after the practice spill drill.
Are there any written answers?
The quizzes are tap-only, so you pick answers rather than type them. The one thing you write is a short incident report after the practice spill drill, on your workplace’s own form or plain paper. You then upload a photo of it.
How long does it take?
It is self-paced, so it depends on you. It also depends on when your supervisor can watch the practical tasks.
Which states is it available in?
Every state and territory. The course teaches national infection prevention and control principles. Your workplace’s own procedures still apply, and if your employer has specific requirements for training, check with them before you enrol.
Can my employer buy it for me, or for our staff?
Yes. Each person enrols with their own details, and each person needs a supervisor at the workplace to fill in the form. If you’d like a hand setting up your team, email [email protected] or call 1300 931 628.
Are there entry requirements?
Apart from having a workplace and a supervisor, no. Before you start we ask for your USI (Unique Student Identifier). If you don’t have one, it’s free and takes about five minutes at usi.gov.au.
How much does it cost?
The Infection Control Certificate is $99 AUD at checkout, all in.
