Already working in WHS? Get your Certificate IV in WHS through RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assesses the safety work you already do against the nationally recognised BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety. MTI’s WHS assessor decides from your evidence. RPL is not guaranteed.
How it works
Six steps, and the first one is free
- 1
Free eligibility check
Answer a few questions below. It costs nothing and there is no obligation. We reply by email.
- 2
Talk with our WHS assessor
MTI’s WHS assessor talks through your work and which evidence suits. You get your RPL fee in writing before you enrol.
- 3
Gather your evidence
Collect records from your real WHS work. A supervisor answers a few questions about what you do.
- 4
One competency conversation
About an hour, by phone or video. We check your identity first, then talk through your work.
- 5
Your result, and any gap training
The assessor decides each unit. Where there are gaps, you are trained inside the same enrolment at no extra cost.
- 6
Pay the balance, receive your qualification
Once your assessment is finished you pay the balance of your fee and we issue your BSB41419 Certificate IV in WHS.
Who it suits
People who already do the work
RPL usually suits people who have done WHS work for about two years or more, such as safety officers and advisers, supervisors and managers with safety duties, and health and safety representatives who have written risk assessments, run consultation or investigated incidents.
Not sure? The eligibility check is free. If you are new to WHS, the full online course is usually the better route.
What counts as evidence
Real records from your work
- Risk assessments you wrote or contributed to
- Incident investigations and reports
- Consultation meeting minutes (for example WHS committee or toolbox talks)
- Safe work method statements (SWMS)
- Inspection and audit reports
- Training records you set up or kept
A CV or payslip on its own is not enough, and a supervisor answers a few questions about your work.
Free eligibility check
Tell us about your WHS work
Six short questions, then your details. It costs nothing, and you do not have to go ahead. The answers go to our team, who will reply by email. This is an indication only: the assessor decides.
Certificate IV in WHS by RPL: your questions answered
What is RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment of the skills and knowledge you already have from work, training or experience. You show evidence of what you can do, and an assessor decides whether it meets the requirements of each unit in the BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety.
Will I definitely get the qualification through RPL?
No. RPL is not guaranteed. The assessor decides each unit from your evidence and your competency conversation. If a unit is not yet met, you are trained in the gap inside the same enrolment. The free eligibility check is there so you know where you stand before you pay anything.
What evidence do I need?
Records from real WHS work that is yours and recent (we usually look for work from about the last two years). Good examples are risk assessments, incident investigations, consultation minutes, safe work method statements, inspection reports and training records. A CV or payslip on its own is not enough. A supervisor also answers a few questions about your work. Please remove other people’s personal details from any record before you share it.
What if I don’t have enough evidence?
That is common. Where your evidence does not cover a unit, you are trained in that gap inside the same enrolment, and the training is included in your fee. If the eligibility check suggests RPL is not the right fit yet, we will say so, and you can look at the full online course instead.
How long does it take?
It depends on how much evidence you already have, how long it takes you to gather it and when you can book your competency conversation. We do not promise a timeframe. After your eligibility check we will tell you what to expect for your situation.
How much does it cost?
Your RPL fee depends on your experience and the evidence you already have, so we quote it for you. Start with the free eligibility check call 1300 931 628, or email [email protected], and we will tell you the fee for your situation. It is confirmed in writing before you enrol, so you know the full cost first. It covers assessing all ten units, your competency conversation, any gap training and your qualification. We never take your full fee up front: part is paid after your assessment result. See our Fee Administration and Refund Policy.
Who assesses my RPL?
MTI’s WHS assessor. They assess your evidence, run your competency conversation and decide each unit. Melbourne Tech Institute is RTO #45799.
Is it the same qualification as the online course?
Yes. RPL leads to the same nationally recognised BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety, issued by Melbourne Tech Institute (RTO #45799). Only the way your competence is assessed is different.
Can I get credit for units I already hold?
Yes. If you already hold some of the units from another registered training organisation, send us the statement of attainment or transcript. We record those units as credit transfer first, and tell you in the written fee note how that affects what is left to assess.
Do I need a USI?
Yes. We ask for your USI (Unique Student Identifier) when you enrol. If you don’t have one, it is free and takes about five minutes at usi.gov.au (opens in a new tab).
