Your Food Safety Supervisor certificate — for Victoria
Who needs a Food Safety Supervisor in Victoria?
Under the Victorian Food Act, all class 1, most class 2 and class 3A food premises must have a Food Safety Supervisor. (Some class 2 community groups that trade for no more than two consecutive days with mostly volunteer staff are exempt.) The FSS needs a Statement of Attainment against the national units.
Renewal: Victoria is the exception: the official Department of Health guidance sets no renewal period and states there is no Victorian requirement to retrain beyond the minimum competencies. Even so, many employers ask staff to refresh their training periodically.
What the Victorian classes mean
Class 1 premises serve food to vulnerable people — hospitals, aged-care facilities, childcare centres, and delivered-meals services such as Meals on Wheels. Class 2 premises handle unpackaged, potentially hazardous food that needs temperature control — most cafés, restaurants, takeaways, bakeries and caterers. Class 3A covers accommodation premises that prepare or cook potentially hazardous food served to guests for immediate consumption. All three must appoint a Food Safety Supervisor.
Which premises don’t need one
Class 3 premises (predominantly low-risk or pre-packaged food) and class 4 premises (pre-packaged, low-risk food) are not required to appoint a Food Safety Supervisor, though they still have food safety obligations. Your local council determines your classification — check with them if you’re unsure which class applies.
