How to Renew a NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate

A cafe owner in a navy apron leans over a laptop at a dining table, holding a printed certificate to check its expiry date, with a wall calendar and an espresso machine behind him.

To renew a NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate you complete a recertification course with a provider approved by the NSW Food Authority, and you can do it while the certificate is still current or up to 90 days after it expires. The whole job is four steps and takes an hour or two online. The part that trips people up is the clock: the day you pass 90 days past expiry, the short renewal is no longer available and you are back to the full course. This guide walks through the steps in order, shows which route applies on which day, and covers the 30-day rule that starts the moment a business has no current certificate. For the wider picture on certificates across every state, start with the Food Safety Supervisor hub.

Which route applies to you: renewal or the full course?

The route depends on one number: how many days have passed since the expiry date printed on your NSW certificate. The NSW Food Authority allows a 90-day window after expiry in which you can still replace the certificate through the shorter recertification course.

Prices above are all-in: the recertification price of $119 includes the $30 NSW certificate issue fee and $5 postage, and the full course is $129 plus the $35 NSW certificate fee and postage. There is nothing else to add at checkout. The cost breakdown for both routes is on our NSW Food Safety Supervisor page, and the general cost guide compares states.

Step 1: Read the expiry date off your certificate

Find the expiry date printed on the NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate itself, not on your Statement of Attainment. A NSW certificate is valid for five years from the date it was issued, and the two documents are separate things. If you only have the national Statement of Attainment, you may be holding the wrong paper; our explainer on what the NSW certificate actually is shows how to tell them apart. Lost it entirely? Read what to do if you lose your certificate first, then come back.

Step 2: Count the days before you do anything else

Work out whether you are before expiry, inside the 90-day window or past it, because that decides your route and your price. Put the date in your phone calendar today. If you are past the 90-day mark there is no clever workaround; the Authority requires the full course, and the fastest honest answer is to start it. Our post on what happens when a NSW certificate expires covers the consequences in more detail.

Step 3: Enrol with an approved NSW provider and complete the renewal

Enrol with a provider the NSW Food Authority has approved to offer recertification, then complete the course online. Not every approved provider offers renewal: on the Authority's public register of approved providers, only about 22 of the roughly 97 listed carry a tick in the recertification column. Melbourne Tech Institute is listed there as offering recertification (approval no. 88522), and you can check the row yourself on the Authority's website before you pay.

The renewal starts with a short core knowledge check of 20 questions, with 80% to pass. After that the four mandatory NSW Key Focus Areas unlock: allergen management, safe egg handling, cleaning and sanitising, and Food Act offences. Your existing SITXFSA005 and SITXFSA006 units are recognised rather than retaught, so you are not sitting the whole course again. Most people finish in an hour or two. You can start from the NSW recertification page or go straight to enrolment.

Step 4: Wait for the posted certificate, and plan for the delay

The renewed NSW certificate is a printed document sent by post, so allow up to 10 business days for it to arrive. The Authority does not permit the NSW certificate to be issued as a soft copy. This is the delay people forget to plan for. Paying for Express does not speed up the posted NSW certificate; Express orders are lodged first, and that is all it changes. Renewing a few weeks before your expiry date is the simple way to make the post irrelevant.

What the 30-day rule means for your business

Under the NSW Food Act, a food business generally has 30 days to appoint a Food Safety Supervisor with a current certificate once the existing one expires. That clock belongs to the business, not to you personally, and it is the strongest reason to renew early: a renewal completed before expiry means the 30 days never start. If you are the only certified person on site and your certificate lapses mid-week, the business is the one carrying the risk at the next council inspection. Our guide to what NSW councils check during an inspection lists the questions inspectors ask about certificates.

A quick checklist before you renew

Use this as a pre-flight check; each line is something that has tripped up a real renewal.

CheckWhy it matters
Expiry date read from the NSW certificate itselfThe Statement of Attainment has no expiry and gives the wrong answer
Days since expiry counted90 days or less keeps the $119 renewal open

In one line: renewal costs $119 all-in, the course certificate is emailed within 1 business day, the NSW certificate follows by post, and there is a money-back guarantee if the course is not right for you. When you are ready, renew online here.

How long is a NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate valid?

A NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate is valid for five years from the date it was issued. After that you need to recertify to stay compliant, and the expiry date is printed on the certificate.

Can I renew my NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate after it has expired?

Yes, if it expired 90 days ago or less. The NSW Food Authority allows a 90-day window after expiry in which the shorter recertification course can replace the certificate. After 90 days you complete the full course instead.

How much does it cost to renew a NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate?

Renewal with Melbourne Tech Institute is $119 all-in, which includes the $30 NSW certificate issue fee and $5 postage. If you are past the 90-day window the full course is $164 all-in.

How long does the renewal take?

Most people finish the online renewal in an hour or two. It starts with a 20-question core knowledge check (80% to pass), then covers the four NSW Key Focus Areas. Allow up to 10 business days for the printed NSW certificate to arrive by post.

Does Express make the NSW certificate arrive faster?

No. Express gives priority marking and lodges your order first, but the NSW Food Authority certificate is a printed document sent by post, so allow up to 10 business days regardless.

What if my certificate lapses and my business has no other supervisor?

Under the NSW Food Act a food business generally has 30 days to appoint a Food Safety Supervisor with a current certificate once the existing one expires. Renewing before expiry avoids that clock starting at all, and training a second person gives you cover if one certificate lapses.
