The Tasmanian rule

Serving alcohol in Tasmania? New staff need an RSA within 3 months.

The Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Branch says a newly employed person at a licensed premises must have completed an approved RSA course, or be enrolled in or doing one, within 3 months of starting. For people who sell or serve liquor, it says it recognises SITHFAB021 from any Australian state or territory. This course is for bar staff and others who sell or serve. It is not for licence holders or licence applicants: the Branch says they need a course from a training provider the Commissioner has approved, with Tasmanian content, and Melbourne Tech Institute is not on that list.

3 monthsFor new staff to complete an RSA or be enrolled in one.
Any stateThe Branch recognises SITHFAB021 from any Australian jurisdiction for staff.

For work in Tasmania

This page is for Tasmania and teaches Tasmania law. Working in Queensland or the Northern Territory? See the Queensland RSA course or Northern Territory RSA course. NSW, Victoria and the other states have their own RSA rules, so an RSA for another state is a different course. Working in Victoria or NSW? Our course isn’t available there yet, but you can register your interest and we’ll email you the day it opens. Not sure? Call 1300 931 628.

Need Food Safety Supervisor too? Get both for $169.

Many pubs, clubs and cafés need both. RSA ($59) plus our nationally recognised Food Safety Supervisor course ($129) is $188 separately — $169 together, save $19. One payment, both courses online.

Tasmania RSA — your questions answered

Is this RSA course accepted in Tasmania?

For people who sell or serve liquor, yes: the Liquor and Gaming Branch’s course page says it recognises SITHFAB021 from any Australian state or territory, delivered by an RTO. Melbourne Tech Institute is RTO #45799 and SITHFAB021 is on our scope — you can check us on training.gov.au. We do not claim approval from the Tasmanian Commissioner. Read the Branch page.

I hold a liquor licence, or I am applying for one. Is this the right course?

No. This course is for bar staff and others who sell or serve alcohol. The Branch says licence holders need a course from a training provider approved by the Commissioner, with Tasmanian content, and Melbourne Tech Institute is not on that approved list. Check the Branch’s course page before you enrol.

How soon do I need it after starting a job?

The Branch says a newly employed person must have completed an approved RSA course, or be doing or enrolled in one, within 3 months of starting. Your employer keeps a copy of your certificate or proof of enrolment.

How much does it cost?

$59, all in. No card fee, no re-sit fee, no certificate fee. The knowledge checks are open book with unlimited retries.

Is there a money-back guarantee?

You have 30 days from enrolling. If you’re not satisfied, email [email protected] and tell us what went wrong — we’ll refund you in full, and we process it within 72 hours. No admin fee, no cancellation fee, and no form to fill in.

How long does it take?

It’s self-paced — do it in one sitting or spread it over a few days. There are nine short modules, most with a short presenter video, and everything is tap-to-answer until the last step, a role-play video of about 3 to 5 minutes.

Does the course cover Tasmanian law?

Yes. Alongside the national RSA content it covers your duties under the Liquor Licensing Act 1990 and the Liquor Licensing Regulations 2026: proof of age, refusing service, asking people to leave and barring orders.

What is the role-play video?

It is your final step. You record one short video on your phone, about 3 to 5 minutes. At the start you hold your photo ID next to your face and say that it is your own work. Then you show how you would refuse service to a customer who has had too much, and how you would ask a customer to leave. You can ask a friend to play the customer or speak to an imaginary one. One of our assessors watches every video. If you cannot record one, call us before you start.

Can I do it on my phone?

Yes. The whole course works on a phone, and your phone camera is what you use to record the final role-play. A computer works just as well for the rest.

Do I get a card?

No, we do not issue a card. You get a Statement of Attainment for SITHFAB021 once your assessor has signed off your results and your USI is on file, and you give a copy to your employer. The Branch’s pages talk about a certificate, not a card.

I work in Queensland, the Northern Territory, NSW, Victoria or another state. Is this the right course?

This page is for work in Tasmania. Working in Queensland or the Northern Territory? See our Queensland RSA course or Northern Territory RSA course. NSW, Victoria and the other states have their own RSA rules, so this isn’t the right course there for now. Working in Victoria or NSW? Our course isn’t available there yet, but you can register your interest and we’ll email you the day it opens. Call us on 1300 931 628 if you’re not sure.

Do I need a USI?

Yes — every nationally recognised course in Australia needs one. If you don’t have one, it takes about five minutes, free, at usi.gov.au, and you can add it after you start.

I also need a Food Safety Supervisor certificate. Do you do that?

Yes — our Food Safety Supervisor course is $129, 100% online and nationally recognised. Many pubs, clubs and cafés need both, so you can get both for $169 (save $19).
