BSB41419 Core and Elective Units Explained

A shelf of black and blue ring binders and bound books, representing the records and procedures covered in the Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety.

The Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (BSB41419) has 10 units: five core units everyone completes and five electives. The unit titles come from training.gov.au. The plain-English notes below are our reading of each title, so check the register for the full requirements of any unit.

How the 10 units fit together

The rule is 5 core plus 5 electives, with at least 3 electives from Group A. Providers choose which electives to offer. The five Melbourne Tech Institute offers are all Group A and are desk-based, so the whole course can be completed with no workplace. See the course page for the current list.

Core units (all five are compulsory)

UnitWhat it is about
BSBWHS412 Assist with workplace compliance with WHS lawsKnowing which WHS laws apply to your workplace, helping the business meet them and spotting where it falls short.
BSBWHS413 Contribute to implementation and maintenance of WHS consultation and participation processesHow workers and others get a say on safety, and keeping those consultation processes running well.
BSBWHS414 Contribute to WHS risk managementIdentifying hazards, assessing risk and helping choose and review ways to control it.
BSBWHS415 Contribute to implementing WHS management systemsHow a workplace organises its WHS policies, procedures and records into a working system.
BSBWHS416 Contribute to workplace incident responseWhat happens when an incident occurs: response, reporting, looking into causes and following up.

Each core unit is worded "assist with", "contribute to" or "implement", which is why the qualification suits people supporting a WHS function. If you are weighing it against HSR training, read WHS officer or health and safety representative.
