Free vs Accredited Food Safety Course: The Difference

Search for a “free food safety course” and you'll find plenty of options - state government intro programs, free awareness modules, and short online tutorials. They can be genuinely useful. But there's an important catch: a free course is almost never an accredited one, and that difference decides whether it actually makes you a qualified Food Safety Supervisor. Here's what you need to know before you enrol.
Are free food safety courses any good?
Yes - for what they are. Free programs like DoFoodSafely and various council or state-run modules are a helpful introduction to safe food handling. They teach the basics: hygiene, temperature control, and avoiding contamination. If you simply want a refresher or some general awareness, they do the job.
What they do NOT do is make you a Food Safety Supervisor. Free programs are not nationally recognised training, they don't include the accredited units of competency, and they don't issue a Statement of Attainment from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
Free vs accredited: the key difference
Here's the difference side by side:
- Free course - basic awareness only, not nationally recognised, no Statement of Attainment, and does not meet the legal Food Safety Supervisor requirement.
- Accredited course - delivered by an RTO, covers the nationally recognised units SITXFSA005 and SITXFSA006, issues a Statement of Attainment, and officially qualifies you as a Food Safety Supervisor across Australia.
Do you legally need an accredited course?
If you're going to be the designated Food Safety Supervisor for a food business, yes. Under Food Safety Standard 3.2.2A, most Australian food businesses that handle unpackaged, potentially hazardous food must have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor. To meet that requirement, your training must be the accredited, nationally recognised course - a free awareness program will not satisfy a council inspection or an employer's compliance check.
When is a free course enough?
A free course can be fine if you only handle food occasionally and someone else is the designated Food Safety Supervisor, or if you just want general knowledge. But the moment you need to BE the supervisor - or your employer, landlord or local council asks for proof - you'll need the accredited certificate.
How much does the accredited course cost?
Less than you might think. At Melbourne Tech Institute you get the complete, nationally recognised Food Safety Supervisor course - both units (SITXFSA005 and SITXFSA006) - 100% online for $99. That's well below the roughly $199 charged by some of the larger providers for the exact same qualification, and your certificate is issued within one business day.
